MBS Fitness offers in-person marathon training programs, twice a year. Each program is geared for runners and walkers ranging from those who have never completed a marathon to elite runners.

The spring marathon training program begins in January for those planning to run marathons  scheduled in spring.  In the past, participants in the spring program have run Los Angeles, Vancouver, Big Sur and other marathons. This year members of the team will run Big Sur, Vancouver and Rock 'n Roll San Diego.

The fall marathon training program begins in summer for those planning to run marathons scheduled in late-fall. In the past, the fall marathon training program benefited the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation. Marathoners joining the Susan Love M.D., Marathon Training Program have in the past trained for and run in the Dublin City Marathon in Ireland.  For 2005, the fitness program benefiting the Foundation will begin in September 10. The marathon training program will begin on July 10. The target marathon this year will be between the ING New York City Marathon and the Orange County Marathon.

Each marathon training program is a comprehensive program personalized for each individual to complete his/her first marathon or improve his/her personal record (PR).

Training Program Benefits:

  • Maximize performance in minimum time since program is individualized to your goals and fitness level, and performance is tracked and monitored weekly

  • Increase chances of beating own PR (personal record) since program is proven in professional athletes training programs, and developed and delivered by a world renown athlete

At the beginning of each program, a VO2 analysis is done to identify your fitness level.  Working with the coach, realistic and achievable goals are set.  A personalized running schedule including target distances or times are provided.  Interval training or Pace Runs are scheduled, as part of the Marathon Training Programs.  Developed and led by an Olympic marathoner, the results of these programs speak for themselves.

The marathon training programs deliver results. In 2003, 36% of participants that raced bested their personal record for an average improvement of over 12 minutes each. In 2002, four of 16 participants were first time marathoners.  Five of the runners broke their personal records by a combined 158 minutes (that's an average improvement of over 31 minutes each!).  In 2001, 17 of 19 bested their PR for a combined improvement of over 9 hours or on average over 31 minutes each. Fall Marathon Training Program Details:

  • In-Person program begins July 10, which will be the last day to join.

  • Team meets at 7:00 am at Ocean & Montana in Santa Monica, California. (Look for Coach Murphy in a kilt with bag pipes. Okay, maybe not, but she'll be out there somewhere by a Red Mustang. Note, the team will not meet on December 25 or January 1)

  • Target race: New York City Marathon (11/6/2005)

Susan Love M.D. Marathon Training Program Details:

  • Program participants raise money for breast cancer research. Visit the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation website for more information about the Foundation and the exciting work it is doing to eradicate breast cancer.
