July 2013:Marie has recently taken up a position as Exercise & Nutrition Consultant for the Irish Osteoporosis Society (IOS). Using the Murphy (MET's) Programme, Marie will conduct studies for patients diagnosed with Osteopenia and / or Osteoporosis. Marie's overall aims are the same as those of the IOS - to significantly decrease the amount of people who are losing their independence and dying prematurely from a condition that is preventable and treatable.
Marie's programme - The Murphy Programme - was picked up by the Irish Cancer Society in 2010. Five studies were carried out on Breast (3), Bowel (1), and Prostrate (1) cancer. The results of the first three studies, The Murphy Programme : The Irish Experience of Delivering Physical Activity for Cancer Survivors has since been published and acknowledged by the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) 2012. Please see AICR abstract and Poster.
